The National Commissioner of Security Renato Sales Heredia announced increased federal crime-fighting efforts for the troubled states of Colima, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua y Quintana Roo.

At a press conference held in Mexico City at the Ministry of the Interior, Sales stated the more uniformed personnel will be deployed in the key cities to fill high-impact arrest warrants, with the objective of deterrent and disruption of the drug trade in those states.

The operations will particularly highlight the cities of Colima, Los Cabos, Ciudad Juarez and Cancun, all high profile tourist areas.

In 2017 the normally quiet state of Baja California Sur surged to the top of the list of homicides per capita for Mexico, with 701 homicides in a population of 637,000 or 110 per 100K. El Salvador was the most dangerous non-warring country in 2016 with 100 homicides per 100K.

The Federal Government has also implemented a "Safe Tourist" program with a focus on providing resources to the important travel destinations across the country. More military resources along with federal police will be a more common sight now in Los Cabos.

The State Police of Baja California Sur are aggressively recruiting young people between the ages of 20 and 30, but to date have been unable to fulfill recruiting needs. A new federal mandate for police competency resulted in the dismissal of a significant number of police in both state and municipal departments along with those that resigned this past December, following the issuance of holiday bonuses.
