The Cross Border Xpress (CBX) pedestrian bridge connecting the Tijuana Airport (TIJ) with the U.S. opened December 2, 2015. This  border crossing is the creation of Ralph Nieder and is a private commercial bridge that will charge a fee to walk across the 525 foot sky bridge. There will be parking and a Terminal building on the the U.S. side in Otay Mesa that will only serve those using the airport for departures and arrivals. There will be parking, check-in areas and customs offices, but no gates or arrival facilities on the U.S. side.

In the past many Southern Californians have found flying out of Tijuana to be cheaper and easier. They park on the U.S. side, walk across the border and then take taxis or buses to the airport. Soon they will be able to park at this  terminal, go through customs, check in and cross straight into the Tijuana airport.

The facility should help Tijuana garner more traffic from the Southern California market as there are many connecting flights from TIJ to Mexico City, all over Latin America and even direct flights to Shanghai. The General Abeiardo L. Rodriguez International Airport as it is officially named can handle 360 flights a day and 10 million passengers a year.

This can also be a great way to fly into La Paz (LAP) or San Jose del Cabo (SJD) with inexpensive direct flights every day. I have personally along with other friends been using this method to get to Southern California cheaply on Volaris. The sky bridge will eliminate the need for us to use taxis from the border to get to the airport and I imagine this could become very popular to avoid the heavier used airports of San Diego (SAN), Santa Ana (SNA) and Los Angles (LAX).
