Columbia Export Service Co. was established in 1974 to provide
services necessary for importation, exportation, general freight
forwarding and transportation of all types of products, commercial as
well as personal goods into Baja California, Mexico. Columbia Export
Services is a group of companies that bring their special expertise to
best solve your product and material transportation challenges.
Doing business in Baja California Mexico often requires the
importation of products from the United States or other countries. In
some businesses importation of equipment, materials and or merchandise
maybe needed occasionally or on a regular basis. In order to import
these goods you will need to use a customs broker or freight forwarder
to properly handle the paperwork for the goods to be accepted into
Mexico and create the pedimientos (green sheets) that become your
proof and business receipts (facturas) for those goods coming into
Mexico. It is only with this proper documentation of your goods
imported that your Mexican business can record the purchase value of
such goods in your company.

The general fees for importation from the U.S. into Mexico include the
customs broker fees, any additional duties required of specific goods
( many times very little to none in Baja), I.V.A. (Sales tax), any
warehouse costs and the transportation over the border.
With the consolidation of services, from Customs Brokers to handle the
Freight forwarding for importation and exportation of goods and
transportation into and out of Mexico. Having their own trucking
company and warehouse services they can provide you the most complete
of services. Columbia Export has 6 offices located at the U.S. /
Mexico Border in Otay Mesa California, San Diego, Ensenada, Tecate and
La Paz and Cabo San Lucas of Baja Sur.

Over the years I have exported many different goods
from the United States to import into Mexico there are several things
you want to be prepared to have ready. You will need to provide your
original receipts of your goods purchased in the states. In some
cases, such as goods imported into the U.S. first, you will be
required to obtain a certificate of origin as well from the supplier,
manufacturer or distributor. Your receipts or goods to be imported
will also have to be translated to Spanish so that Mexican customs (Aduana)
can easily identify what youre importing to Mexico.
You will have to have an importation permit or you may use at an
additional cost the permit of the customs broker. You goods can come
from different areas and consolidated in the warehouse but be sure
your descriptions and quantities are accurate so that your paperwork
will go smoothly. Any inaccuracies can really slow down the process of
importation and or exportation.
Many times products have special requirements and therefore you may
have some extra steps such as obtaining FDA certifications,
agriculture certificates, certificate of origin, and create a
translated order form (catalog) including each of the of the goods you
wish to export from the US into Mexico.
These requirements at first may seem daunting but if you are regularly
planning on importing these goods to Mexico then you may of course you
may re-use the information you have provided and the process will
become more streamlined each time.
There may be other requirements depending on what it is that you are
importing to Mexico and what the use will be. The importation duties
levied by Mexico customs will also be different depending on the goods
and their origin. Some goods may not able to import at all. Please be
sure to consult directly with your customs broker for the most up to
date information.
I have used many different companies through the years for different
services but highly recommend working with Columbia Export Services
because it eliminates the need to try and coordinate warehousing,
freight forwarding and transportation provided by independent
companies. They have it all and provide services for all of Baja
California and most of Mexico.
