Fishing Season 2010 Opens Big at Cedros Island
The first fishing trip of the season was all that we could hope for from the best yellowtail fishing destination of Baja.
From May 1st – 3rd despite strong winds our group was able to enjoy some great fishing. The advantage of fishing at an island such as Cedros is the altitude of the mountains, because they prevent the winds from the northwest from reaching the southeast and eastern waters. Thanks to that, we can almost guarantee fishing outings every day of your fishing trips to Cedros.
Our most experienced panga drivers, Lalo Mata and Diego Bush, took us to the southern waters of the island to explore some of the many banks and kelp beds in the area. The best biting was found at El Raton bank on the southeast, and within yards from the shore in the area between arroyo San Carlos and Gran Canon at the east of the island. Typically these are best sites for yellowtail and last weekend they didn’t disappoint. This time, trolling rapalas worked better than irons or scampis, which is a change from what usually works when the summer is established. During these days our catch was several big yellowtails ranging in size between 32-40 lbs.
The 2010 fishing season is shaping up to be a great one, due to the higher water temperatures expected from El Nino. Cedros Island is now easily accessible from the San Diego area. You can be fishing the first day with fly-in packages that include all transportation, hotel, boats and meals.

Summer Yellowtail Bonanza at Cedros Island
From July 25th to 28th Cedros Outdoor Adventures ran a fly-in trip with 5 anglers from San Diego and LA. Arriving on Friday we went fishing same afternoon for about 5 hours. At Bajo El Morro and La Baliza (at southern region of Cedros) we caught a number of good-size calicos and sheepheads. Moving to the kelp beds we got some more calicos and one happy fellow snagged a 21 kg (44 lb) yellowtail.
Saturday’s catch was even better as our group scored more calicos, barracudas, white fish and sheepheads. The highlights included a 66 lb grouper and three yellowtails between 11 and 13 kg (24 and 30 lbs).
Sunday we went to Bajo San Agustin, because of reports of abundant yellowtail. We found out they were true! We observed dozens of yellowtail swimming by our pangas and splashing in every direction. One of our pangas snagged 18 yellowtails and the other got 13, ranging between 8 and 10 kg (18 and 25 lbs). That afternoon we relaxed at the kelp beds and got more big calicos.
Fishing was done with bottom jigs, scampi and rapalas, as well as dead bait. Our total for the trip was: 36 yellowtails, 1 big grouper, 25 calicos, 10 sheephead, 6 barracudas, and some other. Out of these we released around ten yellowtails, many smaller calicos, barracudas, and some sheepheads.
The weather was sunny with few clouds in the mornings, almost no wind, and water so clear you could see the fish biting your jigs at 40 ft in the kelp beds. The water temperature around 21C and visibility was more than 40 ft.
Cedros Outdoor Adventure’s fly-in trips get you there quickly; you stay in clean, comfortable lodgings, our prices are low and the fishing is amazing at this time of the year. We have openings for August and September, but space on the planes and in the hotels is very limited, so book your dates in advance. You can join one of our open charters, or let us know when you’d like to go and we’ll try to build a group around your dates.
