Club El Moro resort in La Paz, Baja California Sur is a vacation
hotel for the couples or the whole family. Quiet and secure, it
embraces the tranquility of La Paz along the waterfront. .
We first started telling you about Club El Moro in La Paz more than two years ago. At the time we were impressed with the commitment El Moro had to their guest and the unique character of the intimate sized resort. Since that time, several friends and family members have stayed at El Moro, all to great satisfaction. In that time I have developed an even greater appreciation of these unique accommodations and the staff of hotel professionals that make your stay memorable. The Club El Moro is one of those Insider Traveler finds that we had to pass on to you. Located on the north end of the Malecón you can stroll to the center of the action around the bayside bandstand and municipal pier. Walking to downtown shopping is easy too along the beautiful ensenada de La Paz. When you step inside the secured grounds of the El Moro you are in your own little hacienda on the waterfront. A sparkling pool and fountains are practically your own as the limited number of accommodations allow plenty of space for each guest to enjoy the tranquility of a La Paz vacation.
Over
more than 4 years I have come to known as friends Ricardo, Carlos,
Sergio and many other members of the staff who have been with the
hotel for years. It seems every time I visit I meet another repeat
guest by the pool or in the lobby. Even first time guests quickly
feel like family within hours of arrival in this amazingly tranquil
atmosphere.
Doing
absolutely nothing by the pool is a very popular past time but there
are lots of things to do in La Paz as well. On many nights,
particularly weekends, there are events and entertainment available
along the
Malecón. There are a variety of restaurants from authentic local
dishes and taco stands to very good Chinese food. Night Life thrives
on Saturday nights, and is more metropolitan than beach cities, with
a billiard bars, open air cafés and even a decent local rock scene.
Tourist should pack something more stylish than beachwear and
sandals for a night out in La Paz although there are plenty of
places beachwear is just fine.
With all the outdoor activities available in La Paz, gateway to the Sea of Cortez you may find the whirlpool a great way to wash away stress and sore muscles. If you are interested in sport fishing, chat with Carlos at the front desk. He always has some local fishing tips for me, and for you as well I'm sure. And if you want to do some open panga fishing he can set you up with a trip to the Cerralvo Channel, one of the richest fishign grounds in The Sea with the Baja Fisherman's Fleet.
La
Paz shopping once hailed Mexicans from the mainland in droves. Until
the mid 1980’s, Baja was a free trade zone providing good deals on
imports, particularly from the orient. Today, Dorian’s offers
upscale department store shopping along with tiendas selling
watches, shoes, the work of Mexican artisans and much more.
But,
with all that La Paz has to offer, there are two things that stand
out in my mind when I think of La Paz; tranquility and the Sea of
Cortez. It’s a friendly city, where a majority of the people speak
only Spanish and Siesta is still widely observed from 1 to 4PM. The
Sea of Cortez offers the adventure with excellent sport fishing,
scuba diving and boating in secluded bays and islands just miles
from town.
The Club El Moro embodies all the things I enjoy about La Paz in a small resort environment. Located at the north end of the malecon El Moro faces onto the bay. Sailboats casually drift by just a few hundred yards from the entrance. Within easy walking distance from much of what La Paz offers, inside the compound the rest of the world seems quite distant. The sounds of water dripping from the Spanish fountains and calls of tropical birds transport you to a calmer place.
Director Ricardo Curiel constantly refines his vision for this
refuge from the rush of the world outside. Beginning 20 years ago as
beachfront apartments, the El Moro has served as a hotel/resort for
the last 15 years. Manicured lawns, fountains and brilliant flowers
encompass the large central pool area and palapa bar. Surrounding
the pool are 5 striking white buildings of Moorish/
Mediterranean
architecture, which house the office, restaurant and suites. Two hot
tubs provide ample opportunity to soak away cares or the sore
muscles of a day of sport fishing or diving in The Sea.
Club El Moro offers 5 different accommodations. Available are;
standard rooms, studios, junior suites, suites with lofts and two
bedroom executive suites, all of which are air conditioned. The
rooms are spacious and bright with attention to detail and comfort.
The rooms are furnished in a rustico Baja elegance with solid
mahogany
doors and Jerusalem marble in the bath.
Studios and suites include well appointed kitchenettes, which invite guests to feel at home with facilities for long stays. For guest who just can’t leave the modern world at the front desk, Club El Moro offers wireless interconnectivity available throughout the property. You can sit by the pool, enjoy one of Sergio’s Margaritas and lament your workload via email with office co-workers back in reality.

Director Ricardo and is extremely proud of their on-property
restaurant. You can enjoy an omelet andcappuccino for breakfast or
an item from the grill for a late lunch in an intimate atmosphere.
There is seating in air conditioned comfort or choose to dine on the
veranda where The Sea is just yards away. Internet access is also
available on a terminal in the restaurant.
During
my tour, Ricardo pulled a large binder from the shelf. “These are
the standards and preparation instructions for every item on our
menu.” he said. “We hold to the highest quality in our food,
handling and preparation. Everything is documented
and by the book, this has earned us the highest rating our
department of heath offers.” The delicious menu attracts more than
just hotel guests, as local government officials and business people
make a habit of enjoying the fine fare.
Club El Moro is more than just a group of buildings and a place to put your head at the end of a day of sport fishing, scuba diving or just roaming about La Paz. Front Desk Manager, Carlos Rivera explained to me, “It’s our family of employees that keeps our guests coming back year after year.” Indeed, as my family has stayed at the El Moro during visits for nearly three years. From gardeners and house keepers to the front desk, each member of the staff is cheerful, helpful and courteous. They make you feel at home. All of the front desk staff speaks excellent English.
