Fine Waterfront Dining in Los Cabos
7 Seas Restaurant at the Cabo Surf Hotel

Awesome food & awesome view!
Review by David Mandich
One of my favorite waterfront places in which to dine,
is the 7 Seas restaurant at the Cabo Surf Hotel in San Jose de Cabo.
This is one of the most classic “Old Baja” establishments in Los
Cabos. It’s not only waterfront, but it fronts on the most beautiful
cove and surf break in the region. Indeed, many surfside
weddings are
performed here giving the newlyweds memories tropical dreams are made
of.
Off the palapa covered dining terrace is Acapulquitos Beach and the
famous Old Mans surf break where long boarders from around the world
come for glorious rides on perfect waves. You can watch it all over
margaritas and Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps. 100p
The hotel, long a favorite of the luxury SUV with surfboards crowd,
has recently become the talk of Los Cabos with its recently
revitalized restaurant. Chef Alexandro Rodriquez h
as been diligently
working with consultants and attending hotel chef workshops in an
effort to meet the high expectations of the discriminating culinary
surfer, his beautiful wife and their sand covered children.
Two recent visits to the restaurant convinced me that I had discovered
Cabos best kept secret. Where else can you enjoy watching prehistoric
surf legends like Mike Doyle and Walt Phillips surf their last waves,
while you indulge in Sesame Crusted Tuna with Balsamic Vinaigrette and
Tomato Dressing for starters? 110p And maybe swap surf stories with
celebrities like Orlando Bloom or Adam Sandler in the bar over
humongous ice teas or killer lime daiquiris blended to perfection.
Enjoy the house Bouillabaisse soup loaded with
scallops, calamari, octopus, fish and shrimp for only 95p. It’s hard
to focus on the excellent food, when the view of those wave riders
below is so mesmerizing. The Caesar salad comes with dressing made fresh from scratch. 115p. My
favorite is the Spinach Salad with green apple, caramelized walnuts
and blue cheese vinaigrette dressing. The dressing and walnuts
interact in an unusually delightful way. Remember the first time you
ta
sted lobster? Like that. You’ll never go wrong with the Organic
Mixed Salad with lettuce, goat cheese, and walnuts with cranberry
dressing. Guaranteed to make you stand up on your surfboard!
Other appetizers include Won Ton Shrimp – a large Chinese dumpling
filled with shrimp over a bean sauce and Chipotle pepper mirror. The
Tri-Color Shrimp Ravioli comes stuffed with shrimp, ricotta cheese and
spinach over basil, pesto and tomato sauce for 125p. There’s Kiwi
mussels from the pristine bays of New Zealand, classically sautéed
white wine, garlic and parsley. Fish Tostados are available for those
that want to taste something really local. Fresh tuna or yellowtail is
covered with basil-pesto, avocado and teriyaki sauce. Ymmmm.
Dinners are accompanied by baskets of home made warm demi-rolls made
fresh by the pastry chef. Entrees range from rare and exotic
medallions of Kobe Beef covered in a rich cabernet sauce garnished
with King scallops covered in a delicate green chipotle sauce.to
Tamarindo Shrimp with mango and tamarindo sauces. Lobster is served
with Portobello mushrooms, cilantro or butter sauces.

Mexican fare includes Pollo Asado and a Mexican Combo that includes
all of Mexico- Stuffed Chile, Panela Cheese, Seafood Enchilada,
Quesadilla, Chicken Sope, Rice, Beans & Guacamole. Don’t miss the
Potato Scales Fish. A crusted sea bass with asparagus and sauteed
garlic scampi shrimp. Entrees run from approximately $15- 45 US
They have a full bar, stocked with premium liquors including Mexican,
Spanish, California and vintage French wines. The bartender can make
all the fancy tropical drinks known to surfing mankind and even some
you never heard of. Imagine floating in the hammock off the bar with a
pina colada in hand overlooking the beach below while whales spout
offshore and dolphins compete with surfers for the best waves. When I
die, if heaven isn’t any better than this, I’m staying here thank you.
Desserts include a sampling of the usual suspects like
Flan, Triple Chocolate Cake, Key Lime pie and chocolate mousse.
Whatever you do – don’t leave Cabo without indulging in their
Profitaroles – puff pastries stuffed with ice cream flavors of your
choice and topped with chocolate sauce. It’s Delicious, and something
to write the editor of Surfer Magazine about.
The hotel and restaurant, are just a paddle away from Palmilla if
you’re on your surfboard. If you’re basting over from Cabo in your
Beemer, pass by the Querencia entrance on your left, do a four-wheel
slide into the parking lot on your right. If you end up in the arroyo
under the Costa Azul bridge upside down, you missed it. Simply crawl
back south along the beach until you see the Mike Doyle Surf School.
