With Cancun Mexico being recently devastated by a hurricane
there are a lot of people that decided to change their bookings to Los
Cabos this Christmas season. Cancun has recovered for the most part but
many have already made their changes and Cabo is going to be filling up.
No worries if you are not into the crowds as in any major city of Baja
it is not far to get out of town and enjoy the old laid back Mexico many
have come to love.
For another alternative you may want to try a Christmas
vacation in
La Paz,
the capital city of Baja California Sur (map)
which has a fantastic Mexican Christmas ambience. Try the
Club El Moro for excellent
accommodations, starting at $70 per nite.
While strolling down the Malecón in shorts at night and listening to the
Christmas music and looking at all the decorated houses, Christmas trees
and
poinsettias
everywhere, really is a treat for those northerners that only see the
usual white Christmas. .Sport Fishing can still be great at this time
of year and you may make your bookings with either the
Baja Fisherman´s Fleet or the
Mosquito Fleet for an open panga sport fishing experience.
Because the waters are still reasonably warm snorkeling and diving is
also a great thing to do out of La Paz and you may make these bookings
via the experts at
Club Cortez which operate out of both La Concha hotel or the
new CostaBaja Marina.
Ensenada (map)
is in Baja Norte and is another favorite of the big cities for Christmas
being just over the California,- Mexico border by about 2 hours; it can
be visited for just a few days or even one if returning to San Diego.
Most of the major cities have some real nice pastoral scenes and are famous
for their Posadas (Christmas parties) through the early part of December
actually lasting on past New Years Eve. Then after the year begins Mexicans
still celebrate 10 days of Christmas ending with the
Day of 3 Kings.
Leave it to the Mexicans to know how to keep the Christmas spirit going.

For those that want to get away from not only the cold
north but the crowds as well there are plenty of beach and desert camps
to be made all over the Baja California Peninsula. Maybe a trip to the
painted caves by
San Ignacio or a kayaking or
sailing trip to any number of islands in the Sea of Cortez
is more to your liking. The beauty of Baja is its great contrast between
the desert and mountain solitude, with its endless beaches and outrageous
night life in the major cities. There is something for every one and even
if the flights are out range for the pocket book, the
drive down the
Baja Peninsula during the Christmas vacation
time can be very enjoyable. In the desert expect cool to cold conditions
at night but as in most of Baja the days are warm if not still down right
hot. The waters in the southern part of Baja are still warm and are great
for swimming, sport fishing, snorkeling and diving.
The biggest thing to remember is to
camp or do your beachcombing where or when there is not much wind. Unless
of course if you are one of the many windsurfers that visit at this time
of year to take advantage of the northern winds that can blow pretty stiffly
down the Sea of Cortez. The winds while common are not all day long and
generally lay down at night making for very pleasant evenings.
