This year, 2006, marks
the 9th annual Todos Santos Art Festival. The Art Festival might not be
exactly what you expect. The streets are not lined with artists and artisans
selling their works and wares. Exotic food and drink are not found on every
street corner. The Todos Santos Art Festival is as much about Mexican culture
and performing arts as it is about paintings, drawings and sculptures.

Funded primarily by the government, the Art Festival brings folk dancing,
music and theatre performance to Todos Santos. Guest speakers come to host
conferences (including video) concerned with turtle conservation, fragile
environments, fighting drug addiction and domestic violence, family relations,
poetry appreciation, and Baja history. There are workshops teaching latin
music and folk dancing. There are recitals featuring piano and poetry. Not
your average art festival.

Typically, the festival is held at the end of January or
the beginning of February. Beginning on a Saturday and ending the following
Saturday, the festival's opening weekend includes art and drawing displays
in the main plaza. All week long in the "Profesor Néstor Agúndez" Cultural
Center, there is an art and drawing and regional crafts exhibition. Mexican
folk dancing is featured opening weekend in the afternoons and in the evenings
there is usually a music or dance show in the plaza.
The
final Saturday usually includes a public dance to a popular live band in
the plaza. Because of the strange dates of the 2005 Festival, it appears
there will not be a public dance this year. Many local art galleries also
have special exhibits or shows to coincide with the occurrence of the annual
Todos Santos Art Festival.
If you are thinking of visiting Todos Santos during the art festival, you
should secure your accommodations
early
as late January and February are some of the most popular times for visitors
to come to town. It can sometimes be difficult to find rentals or hotel
rooms.
The hard work of organizing the festival is being done by many supporting
community groups and individuals with the single goal of making the 2005
Art Festival one of the best ever held in Todos Santos. So come to Todos
Santos and celebrate the beauty and richness of the Mexican Culture with
us.
Todos
Santos is located on the Tropic of Cancer in the southern portion of the
Baja Peninsula in Mexico just one hour north of Cabo San Lucas and one hour
south of La Paz. Long known as a cultural, artistic and agricultural center,
the town is a desert oasis, 1 kilometer from the Pacific Ocean at the foothills
of the Sierra de La Laguna mountains. Since the mid 1980's, the area has
become a tourist / retirement destination and home to numerous art galleries,
artists, fine restaurants, elegant hotels, unique vacation rentals and local
festivals.
