Spring Brings New Wave of Activity to La Paz and CostaBaja Resort & Marina
Late spring is one of my favorite times in La Paz. The weather is warming up into summer, the skies are clear and a breeze cools the evening to a lovely outdoor dining environment. The summer fishing season is beginning to bring in Dorado and even Marlin. Scuba diving in the Sea of Cortez of course, is legendary, with Jacque Cousteau calling the Sea, “Aquarium to the World.” Spring has also brought new activity in the development of the CostaBaja Resort & Marina.
There are seasons to Baja travel of course. The busiest time of year has traditionally been with the snowbirds and Sea of Cortez cruisers, from November to April. The summer months bring a different group of Baja visitors. Fishermen and scuba divers find Baja to be their paradise from mid June through late October. And the windsurfing crowd filters back to Baja in late October. This leaves a few ‘tweener’ times that have always been popular with those who live here year round and have become increasingly popular with those Baja insiders who also know the secret.
Late April through June and mid October through mid November are just such ‘tweener’ times. During these times the Sea of Cortez is very inviting, the days are warm, yet the nights still have a freshness in the air that can forgive the heat of mid day. If you are a sailor, there is usually a fresh breeze, enough to fill the rags and get you where you are
going. Out on the Sea, the daytime highs have not reached their summer potency, but still encourage you to take a swim in the Sea, which by now is in the mid 70’s.
With the growth of the CostaBaja Resort more people are having the opportunity to experience these special times of year here in La Paz. I made CostaBaja home 3 years ago this week and was recently musing at the changes time has brought.
Gradually, as one after another piece has been added to the picture, CostaBaja Resort has become a “destination”-- for travelers seeking to enjoy the La Paz experience, homeowners looking for the classic slice of Baja beachside living, and discerning members of the La Paz community. With four fine dining establishments, the marina evenings are usually chorused with the sounds of folks enjoying a night out on the town. Bismarck offers Baja style seafood as a specialty and Gula serves up Mexican eclectic, where the food is almost too pretty to eat. Azul Marino’s chef Christine was hard pressed to put a label on their style but the delicious food is obviously a blend of her experience in French, International, Organic and Mexican restaurants in Mexico City and the U.S. Maridaje features some of the best grilled beefsteak, a gourmet burger and outrageous salads, a taste at CostaBaja to suit any hunger.
Nightly, these folks dine with the backdrop of the marina in the Pueblo Marinero at the restaurants until 11PM or so. Earlier, some had found their way to the Cortez Club Sunset Bar or enjoyed Happy Hour at the Palapa Bar.
Daytime has brought a change to activity around CostaBaja Resort as well. The best activities offered to explore the Sea of Cortez are right here on the property. Cortez Club offers diving, fishing, snorkeling and island excursions that can whisk tourists, guests at the Fiesta Hotel and CostaBaja homeowners off to a magical adventure on the nearby islands or secluded bahias just minutes from the marina. FunBaja, also located on site, has a constant stream of visitors heading to their boats in the morning…folks seeking to snorkel with the sea lions, hike the islands or scuba some of the outstanding dive sites in the area.
The Moorings fleet moved to CostaBaja Resort & Marina last fall and is providing bareboat and skippered sail and power charters for those wishing to explore the marvels of The Sea with greater freedom. The fine row of sail and powercats, from 37 to 52 feet are so popular that they are rarely seen at the dock between charters at this prime time of year for exploring the Sea of Cortez.
For the ultimate luxury sail charter, Barcos Que Cantan (Boats That Sing) has three tall rig luxury Turkish-built sail yachts, all around 100’ berthed here at the marina. These boats sail with a full compliment of crew for small groups decided upon exploring The Sea in stately luxury with fine dining.
The exclusive CostaBaja Beach Club is of course a major attraction for homeowners., There they can enjoy a beachside lap in the horizon-less pool, work out in the fully equipped Fitness Center, and then reward themselves with a delicious meal or refreshing drink in perhaps the finest place in La Paz to catch a Bahia de La Paz sunset.
Soon there will be additional diversions to enjoy and more folks to enjoy them. The Gary Player Design Golf Course is set to break ground next month. A key step is that construction has begun for the water treatment facility, The plant will process the waste water from the city of La Paz which will be used to irrigate the golf course and help it become, in this desert environment, the luxurious green that golfers expect.
Ground has also been broken on the Vista Mar community of the Phase II development of CostaBaja Resort. There are more than 25 species of indigenous plants that must be carefully transplanted and maintained through the construction process. Cardon Cactus and Elephant trees are the bigger plants that receive special attention during transplant, but even the cactus that produce the pitaya (also Pitahaya) must be moved and maintained before construction can begin. To ensure the 70% survival rate required by Mexican law, CostaBaja employs a company biologist who will ensure the natural environment is conserved.
(A side note here: I recently discovered there are two types of Pitaya (Hylocereus ) cactus producing two very different fruits, both about the size of a crabapple. The sweet pitaya is the favored, and it grows on cactus that is straight and stands ‘neat’ in the desert. The sour pitaya is produced from a similar cactus that looks like it has an organizational problem. Twisted and scattered looking, the sour pitaya can be quickly identified from its sweeter more organized sister.)
Soon the Las Colinas neighborhood will join the list of projects underway at the resort. These one-and two-story hillside homes, designed in a rustic style reminiscent of a village in Tuscany, will be located - between the 10th and 11th holes of the Gary Player Design golf course. These 56 new homes will make the marvels of the CostaBaja/La Paz living lifestyle available to even more seeking a piece of the Baja dream.
Throughout the spring quite a few folks have enjoyed the hospitality of CostaBaja and had opportunity to become familiar with the unique lifestyle and investment opportunity that the Resort offers. Qualified guests have enjoyed whale watching outings and day trips to
Espiritu Santos as well as enjoyed beachside buffets and tours of the Vista Mar model home.
