The Centro Multicultural de Artes in Los Barriles has had a very busy
schedule since the “season” started! Enthusiasm is at an all time high
with yoga, pilate, stability ball, adult stretch, ballet for niños and
adults, kickboxing, and step aerobics. The Blue Moon production company
is using the Center to paint and store their sets for “Crimes of the
Heart” and future productions. Coming soon will be additional classes
and workshops in water color and African Drumming along with a new
schedule for English classes for niños and adults.
As many of you know, the Center has been without a
working baño for several months. Although the owners of the property
promised to build a proper baño for the Center, it has not been
forthcoming. Thanks to a generous donation from Jackie Reeves and her
yoga students we now have a lovely blue “Portapotty” gracing the Center
which works as a temporary solution. As a matter of fact, OUR baño was
the ONLY functioning baño in downtown Los Barriles for a few hours
recently when the community water was shut down.
The major challenge the Asociación de Artes faces is
that the original promise of a donation of the Ruiz property is in
question at this time. The Board of Directors is addressing this issue
carefully. We are currently working on a solution that will give us a
permanent secure location for the Center and its programs. We are
looking at all of our options and will keep the community posted. The
addition of Ann Hazard, Jackie Reeves and Frank Haurwitz to our Board of
Directors has provided new energy, helping us keep our focus on the
issues involved so that we may continue to serve the entire community.
Gracias for your support! The Asociación de Artes del Mar de Cortez A.C.

From time to time, we at East Cape Tackle in Plaza del Pueblo purchase
used fishing equipment. We do not buy from people we don’t know and we
make every effort to insure that we know where these items come from. If
we are informed of what type of fishing tackle is involved in a robbery
we do our best to watch for these stolen items coming into our shop. If
there is any doubt as to an item’s origin, we will not buy it. It is,
however, difficult to tell the difference between on used reel or rod
from another.
We know that fishing equipment is expensive. We suggest
that identify marks or numbers be engraved on your fishing equipment.
Take photos of your marked equipment and keep them in a safe place. Then
if someone brings in a used item for sale, we will have a means to
positively identify it. If it proves to be a stolen item, we can inform
the rightful owner.
We want to do
all we can to prevent theft. We have an electric engraving tool. If you
bring your equipment to East Cape Tackle, Plaza del Pueblo #4 we’ll help
you mark your gear.

Rancho la Venta
|
|
Rancho la Venta, neighbor to Rancho Verde, lies in the foothills
of the La Laguna mountain range between San Bartolo and San
Antonio. Rancho la Venta was once part of an extended group of
cattle ranches known for their rich grass-covered grazing lands.
We have been told by the ancestors of families who originally
owned Rancho la Venta that revoluciónarios, on their way to the
Sea of Cortez, rode through Rancho la Venta, guns blazing, during
the Mexican revolución, Some claim that bullet holes can still be
seen on the walls of the original ranch casa.
Rancho la Venta is now the home of Bob and Liz
Pudwell. They have created a tranquil rustic setting for their
horses and extensive organic garden, without destroying the
original character of the old ranch. They are now offering trail
rides and overnight pack trips to ranch sites in the area. This is
an excellent opportunity for “eastcapers” and visitors alike to
and explore the historic mountain landscape of the East Cape
region.
Portrait of Maya Woman Discovered
|
|
An international team of archeologists has unearthed the
earliest known portrait of a royal Maya woman. The 6½ foot
stone stele is at least 200 years older than the earliest
previously known portrait of a Maya queen. The stele was
damaged during an attack on a Maya city known as Naachtun in
a remote section of Guatemala around AD 400. It was then
buried ceremonially amid the ruble as the city was rebuilt.
Team leader, Kathryn Reese-Taylor of the University of
Calgary states, “That kind of reburial is done very
infrequently. The historic events on the monument were
incredibly important to the history of the site. We think
that this woman would have been really important to the
people of Naachtun. There are prominent queens later, but
not in this period.”
The stele is also unusual in that it portrays only a woman’s
head in profile in the center of the stone. “This is truly a
portrait,” Reese-Taylor states, “We have not found another
like it in the Maya area. I’m pretty confident it is a
historical figure of an early queen.” Archeologist Julia
Guernsey of the University of Texas said the gender is
significant. “It means that we may need to reevaluate the
role and status of women within Early Classic Maya political
dynamics.”
Naachtun, found in 1922 by Sylvanus Morley, is about half a
mile from the border of Mexico. It was largely ignored until
Reese-Taylor’s team began working there in 2004. The city
probably was founded around 400 BC, but it thrived during
the Early Classic Maya Period from AD 150 to 600. Some of
its influence probably arose from its critical position
halfway between Tikal and Calakmul, the two greatest cities
of the Classic Maya world. These two cities formed powerful
confederacies and fought wars with each other, both directly
and through proxies. The partial destruction of the stele
around AD 400 probably occurred during one of those wars
according to Reese-Taylor. |
