La
Paz prepared for the impact of Hurricane Ignacio beginning mid-day
Saturday August 23, 2003. High winds plagued the area since late Saturday afternoon and
the rain began in earnest late Sunday.
The
pre-dawn hours Monday, August 25 brought the strongest portion of the storm. With the
wind from the SE heavy wave action was evident in most of the anchorages and
downtown marinas.
Damage
from the storm was relatively light. Onshore damage was mostly limited to
downed trees and signage.
Some
roofs were blown off and there is a lot of debris in the streets. There
was limited street flooding.
Of
the vessels in the harbor, Fleur de Mar is known to have sank at the Magote anchorage,
three vessels were grounded along the Malécon and one by the Navy base south
of Marina La Paz. Fleur de Mar was salvaged on September 10 by a consortium
of concerned local boaters and friends of the owner.
Quick
work during the passing of the eye allowed rescue of the sailing vessel
"Maki" by the Navy and two cruisers from grounding in front of
Hotel Los Arcos.

There
were several vessels that lost their headsails in the first half of the
storm. Most emergency reparation was completed during the long 4 hr lull of
the eye and preparations for a 180 degree change of the wind direction was
anticipated.
