Information on Hurricane Flossie - Eastern Pacific 2007

Information on Hurricane Flossie 2007

Flossie has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm as it moves south of the Hawaiian Island Chain

THE TROPICAL STORM WARNING FOR THE BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII HAS BEEN CANCELLED

09AM MDT 08/15/07 Flossie, once a major Category 4 hurricane, has now been downgraded to a Tropical Storm as it brushes past the Big Island of Hawaii. Flossie is now located about 290 miles south of Honolulu. The storms current position is 17.4N 157.9W and the storm is moving 270° at 15mph. Current central barometric pressure is estimated at 1005Mb and winds are 45-55kts. The forecast calls for the storm to parallel the Island chain as it dissipates, being reduced to a Tropical Depression by early Friday. However, if you look at the most recent satellite images it appears the storm is already loosing structure and a bulk of the moisture appears to e moving to the NE, back across the Big Island.

It is again interesting that the NHC forecast models have done an accurate job of forecasting storm track. On the other hand, intensity forecasts have fallen short. Originally this storm was forecast to remain a tropical storm and pass south of the Islands as a depression. Late week, the storm was forecast to only briefly maintain hurricane strength. Now the storm is on the brink of becoming a Category 5 Hurricane and is forecast to maintain hurricane intensity through mid week.

Flossie was one a Category 4 storm as it moved across the open Pacific. Fortunately, the storm began to diminish as it crossed cooler waters approaching the Island Chain. TS Flossie will not affect the weather here in Baja.
