Ivo weakens to a Tropical Depression as it heads toward Baja California Sur

Information on Tropical Depression Ivo direct from Baja California Sur

03PM MDT 09/23/07 Tropical Depression Ivo to pass south of Cabo San Lucas

Tropical Depression Ivo has lost it's cyclonic action and continues to degenerate as it move toward Baja California Sur. TD Ivo is currently some 89 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas. The current estimated position is 22.0N 110.9W  and movement is 80° at 4kts. Central barometric pressure is estimated at 1007Mb and winds are 25kts with gusts to 35kts. Tropical Depression Ivo is now forecast to pass south of the southern tip of Baja California Sur over the next 24-36hrs. Parts of East Cape and Los Cabos have already seen rain, moderate to heavy at times.

Residents of the southern most portion of Baja Sur may have chance of rain though tomorrow night. Ivo is expected to dissipate into a tropical low by late Tuesday. Effects of this weather system should be minor  For travelers, roadways during and immediately after passage of the rain bands may be flooded and some washouts may occur, depending on the amount of rain received. For tourists, evidence of the passing of the storm will usually be cleaned up with 24hrs. And for residents, it means additional rain for our water table.

Ivo is a bit of a disappointment for many in Baja Sur. The storm was never forecast to become a dangerous hurricane and much of Baja Sur could use the additional rain.

Tropical Storm Ivo was down graded to Tropical Depression Ivo at 3AM on 09/23. Hurricane Ivo was downgraded to a Tropical Storm at 3PM MDT on 09/21. Ivo became a hurricane in the 9PM report from the NHC on 09/19. Tropical Storm Ivo evolved from TD12E in the 9PM release from the National Hurricane Center in 9/18. Tropical Depression 12E formed about 670 miles south by southeast of Cabo San Lucas and was declared a tropical depression at 11AM on 09/18/07..

We will continue to monitor the progress of this system over the next few days. The best we could hope for is for the system to weaken to a depression before making landfall in Baja Sur and deliver more much needed rain.

Next update from the NHC at 3PM MDT
