A TROPICAL STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII...AND FOR ALL OF MAUI COUNTY...WHICH INCLUDES THE ISLANDS OF MAUI...KAHOOLAWE...LANAI...AND MOLOKAI. A TROPICAL STORM WATCH MEANS THAT TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS ARE POSSIBLE WITHIN THE WATCH AREA...GENERALLY WITHIN THE NEXT 48 HOURS. INTERESTS IN THE REMAINDER OF THE STATE OF HAWAII...INCLUDING THE ISLANDS OF OAHU...KAUAI...AND NIIHAU...SHOULD CLOSELY MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF FELICIA. A TROPICAL STORM WATCH MAY BE REQUIRED FOR SOME OF THESE AREAS LATER TODAY.
August 9, 2009 7:29 AM MDT Hurricane Felicia continues to weaken as it moves toward the Hawaiian Islands of Hawaii and Maui. The system is forecast to continue to weaken and make landfall as a tropical storm on either or both of the islands of Hawaii and Maui late Monday or early Tuesday.
Tropical Storm Felicia is currently located near 20.3N 144.7W and is moving 280° at 12kts. Central barometric pressure is estimated at 937Mb and winds are 70kts with gusts to 95kts. Hurricane Felicia is over sub26°C waters and should continue to weaken over the next 24hrs.
Tropical Storm Felicia formed from TD8E on the morning of August 4 some 1210 miles WSW of Cabo San Lucas. Felicia was upgraded to Hurricane Category 1 in the 3PM MDT release from the National Hurricane Center. Felicia became the first major hurricane to originate in the Eastern Pacific Basin for the 2009 Hurricane Season.
