Carnaval Ensenada will struggle to be held February 4-9 and the theme this year is “Celebrating the Cultures”. As rough as it has been for Carnaval La Paz, Carnaval Ensenada appears even closer to the edge of extinction. With very limited information and publicity available online the most available information in the press concerns who will foot the bill of about $450,000USD for the production of Carnaval. The Carnaval committee has already indicated that no major acts will be performing during this years events.

Unlike Carnaval La Paz the queen of Carnaval La Paz is chosen by judges for her culture, beauty and artistic talents. Maybe the event will return to the original intent of Carnaval, as a social event, the crowning the local queen of Carnaval and the royal court, both children’s and adult winners, will still be a part of Carnaval. Local displays of talent can be even more culturally enlightening that expensive main stream acts.

The fundamental challenges facing both Ensenada and La Paz is no one wants to pay for it. The events grew significantly in both sophistication and costs. At the same time the cities grew and today much of the commercial areas do not benefit and are sometimes hurt by the increased traffic to the Carnaval neighborhoods.
