03/02/22 03/02/22 As of March 2 the entire state of Baja California Sur has been lowered to Categoy 1. Green, where most restrictions on activities imposed for COVID-19 have now been removed.

02/20/22 The worst of the latest wave of COVID-19 to roll through Baja California Sur may have passed, with current known infected patients down to about one quater that of the high in mid-January. All municipalities in Baja California Sur have been improved to Level 2. Masks are still required in all public spaces. This week’s number indicates a continued improvement across the state with significantly fewer infections, 1593 active cases in the state. Hospital occupancy has fallen slightly in the major communities and Mulegé, but resources remain strained at high levels in the municipality of Comondú.

On Thursday 01/27 the Salvatierra Hospital in La Paz announced that there were 52 cases of COVID-19 among the staff, but the hospital will continue to fully function.

The last wave may have been significant worse than the statistics represented, as the State Health Director Zazil Flores Aldape admitted on Wednesday that there is a backlog of more than 7000 tests, backlogged from the peak of the pandemic wave that “…are slowly being added back in…”, as testing catches up. This is a spectacular way to statistically round off the spike, whether intentional or not, making the statistics much less useful. There was no indication by the director here those cases were omitted.

La Paz would have appeared to be the epicenter of the latest outbreak in January, despite having similar populations to the municipality of Los Cabos, La Paz had more than 5 times the number of active cases. But the majority of the difference between the two municipalities is mainly in ambulatory cases where La Paz had 5096 and Los Cabos with just 887, while hospitalizations totals are nearly equal with La Paz having 58 and Los Cabos having 57. Los Cabos had nearly 2x the number of intimated cases compared to La Paz. The dramatic difference between the holiday tourist destination of Los Cabos and less of an international destination, La Paz is statistically unlikely, and more likely the result of the availability and active use of testing in the state’s two largest municipalities.

The reduction to Level 3 will mean more restrictions on the occupancy of businesses, greater restrictions on businesses selling alcohol, social events, and the hours for the sale of alcohol in stores. Restrictions for Level 4 are even greater to be applied to the municipalities of Mulegé and Comondú.

Baja California Sur reported its first cases of the Omicron variation on Thursday, February 3. The vast majority of the new cases presenting currently are of the Delta variant.
