The Fiestas de Fundación de La Paz celebrates the 483 anniversary of the founding of La Paz by Hernan Cortez in 1535. Unlike Carnaval La Paz, which resembled your county fair, Foundation Days focuses on Cultural events.
The events kick off on Thursday, May 3 at the Kiosk on the Malecon following a reenactment there of the landing of Cortez and other local cultural presentations.
All events on the main stage on the Malecon are free and open to the public.
The evening’s main events will be the performance of singer-songwriter Nicho Hinojosa, Hinojosa began singing at the age of eight. Influenced by classic rock bands, he started playing drums in a local band, and attended Monterrey’s prestigious “Escuela Superior de Música y Danza”. In 1993 Hinojosa debuted as a solo artist with the release of Detrás del Horizonte.
One of the touted high points of the cultural festival will be the second performance of the evening, Lila Downs. Ms. Downs was born in Oaxaca, Mexico is the daughter of Mixtec singer Anita Sanchez and Allen Downs, a Scottish-American art professor and filmmaker. Her musical vision is anthropological in nature, as varied as the ancient and earthy cultures that continue to nurture and inspire her. The topic of her music is often political and social justice, immigration, and transformation, all rooted in the human condition.
On Friday night the Grupo Arrhythmia performs on the main stage on the Malecon with their rebellious rock style in a rock trio. The same evening the “Pasion por el Sabor” culinary event with singer Paty Cantu will entertain. Tickets for this event are $800 pesos per person. The event will be held at the luxurious Marea events salon in La Paz.
Saturday will feature the band from Oaxaca La China Sonidera on the main stage on the Malecon. A band of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, they have found a new ground to create a mix of Cumbia and Tropical sounds, rich with the flavors of such traditions as funk, vallenato, hip-hop, Gitano, reggae and ranchero rock. As a result of this fun and fresh energy sound that will make for a great evening.
Security for the event will be adequate, announced the Dirección General de Seguridad Pública, Policía Preventiva y Tránsito Municipal, with 10 patrol units, 6 motorcycle police, and 125 uniformed officers.
This year’s performers appeal to a younger age group than in previous years and the lineup shows a shift in the appeal of the events. Total cost for the Foundation Days events is said to have cost about $175,000USD.
