Take the opportunity to play Santa to kids from the Soledad Albergue, who are depending on you for Christmas this year. The kids write letters to Santa, and we pass them out to generous cruisers and townspeople, who buy presents, wrap them and return them to the Rotary Club Bahia de La Paz, Santa’s helpers and program sponsors. The Club delivers them to the kids during their Christmas program before they leave for the holidays. Your reward is a photo with your child next to Santa usually with a big smile.
What and where is Soledad Albergue? Soledad Albergue is located inland on the Baja roughly behind San Evaristo, and is an hour and a half drive from La Paz, about half on paved roads and half on rough gravel. Kids from 5 to 14 years old from widely spread rural families attend the school. It’s too far to go home at night for most of the children, so they live in dormitories at the albergue. Money is in short supply in these areas, as sometimes kids will mention in their letters to Santa. Often we are the only source of Christmas presents.
Letters are available to interested cruisers and those of you living on land during the coffee hour at Club Cruceros , Marina de La Paz. The Christmas program is mid December, so you have time before then to shop, wrap and return the gifts to Charles Moorhead on Shadowfax, Marina de La Paz. Members of Club Rotario drive them out to the Albergue before their Christmas program.
This is a wonderful opportunity to bring some joy to a needy kid here in this country that so many of us have come to know and love.
