Third Annual La Paz Moonlight Triathlon – March 12, 2016

More than 1,000 athletes and supporters from around the world are expected in La Paz to participate in the 2016 Moonlight Triathlon, taking place on Saturday, March 12. The event, part of the FMTRI National Circuit, will be held at the picturesque seaside town of La Paz, Baja California Sur and will feature live music, food and activities for the entire family to enjoy.

La Paz, named “The Aquarium of the World” by oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, is the ideal site for the Moonlight Triathlon. Athletes will marvel at the wondrous natural scenery of La Paz as they cross the finish line and enjoy the music and warm hospitality as they celebrate post-race.

“We are honored and ready to welcome the Moonlight Triathlon athletes to the wonderful city of La Paz,” said Gerano Ruiz, Secretary of Tourism Department. “This event will showcase the beauty and hospitality La Paz has to offer to both participants and visitors from around the world.”

The swimming, cycling, and running courses aim to challenge and motivate athletes’ endurance and will take place along the spectator-friendly downtown boardwalk known as the Malecón and the Sea of Cortez.  Participants’ category will be determined by gender and age. Everyone from beginners to experienced triathletes are welcome to register. 

The triathlon is a selection event to the World Triathlon Championship 2016 in Cozumel. Registration is open through March 11, 2016. The event expects 5,000 visitors and an economic impact of $9.5 million pesos. The Moonlight Triathlon is sponsored by the Tourism Department of Baja California Sur through Baja California Sur Tourism Board and La Paz Tourism Board, Innovasport, ESPN, Gatorade, GMC, Americas Triathlon, Triathlon Mexico and Flanax.
