AT 9AM FROM THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER: HEAVY RAINS BEGINNING TO SPREAD OVER SOUTHERN BAJA CALIFORNIA…

The government of Mexico has extended the Hurricane Warning for the southern portion of the Baja California peninsula eastward to Los Barriles.  The government of Mexico has also issued a Tropical Storm Watch along the west coast of the Baja California peninsula from north of Cabo San Lazaro to Puerto San Andresito

SUMMARY OF WATCHES AND WARNINGS IN EFFECT:

A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Los Barriles to Todo Santos
A Hurricane Watch is in effect for Todo Santos to Cabo San Lazaro
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Los Barriles to San Evaristo & Todo Santos to Cabo San Lazaro
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for San Evaristo to Loreto & Cabo San Lazaro to Puerto San Andresito

A Hurricane Warning means that hurricane conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area.  A warning is typically issued 36 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds, conditions that make outside preparations difficult or dangerous.  Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion.

A Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area.  A watch is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds, conditions that make outside preparations difficult or dangerous.

A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area within the next 36 hours for the southern portion of the Baja California peninsula.

A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours.

9AM MDT Aug 8, 2016, Tropical Storm Javier is moving toward a rendezvous with the southern portions of the Baja peninsula over the next 48hrs. Tropical Storm and Hurricane Watches and warnings have been posted for much of Baja California Sur. As of 3AM Javier is not forecast to achieve hurricane intensity before reaching Baja. Tropical Storm Javier is now less than 75 miles south of Cabo San Lucas and the effects of the system will be felt beginning early this morning.

At 9AM Tropical Storm Javier was located near 22.0N 109.2W and was moving 310° @ 09kts. The Central barometric pressure was 999Mb and winds were 45kts with gusts to 55kts, making Javier a solid tropical storm. Tropical Storm force winds extend out 40 to 50 miles,  on the eastern side of the system and 30 miles on the western side which means Javier remains a very small tropical cyclone. Twelve seas extend out 75 miles on the northeastern side of Javier and only 30 miles on the SE and NW side of the system.  Javier is expected to track along the westeern coast of Baja California Sur through Thursday, when it will be reduced to a Tropical Depression as it nears the northern state of  Baja California.

Javier is drawing thunderstorms that could be severe at times, west from the Mexican mainland . These will affect La Paz and the East Cape regions this morning, even before the arrival of the tropical cyclone. The Los Cabos region will begin to see showers and thunderstorms directly associated with Javier this morning.
