9AM MDT August 20, 2016, Tropical Storm Kay has reached its zenith as a moderate Tropical Storm some 255 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas. TS Kay took a bit of a jog to the north-northwest early this morning but now appears to have resumed the forecast track which will take it harmlessly off into the Pacific well to the west of Baja California Sur. The indirect effects of the system will be felt in the southernmost portions of the peninsula through the first of the week, with increased humidity and a regular chance of afternoon thunderstorms.

At 9AM Tropical Storm Kay was located near 20.2N 112.6W and was moving 345° @ 5kts. Central barometric pressure was 1000Mb and winds were 45kts with gusts to 55kts, making Kay a moderate Tropical Storm. Tropical storm force winds extend out 40 to 50 miles only on the western side of the system and 12ft seas extend out 90 miles in the east and 60 to 90 miles on the western side of Kay.

Tropical Storm Kay is forecast to encounter less favorable conditions on Sunday and cross the 26°C thermocline west of the peninsula early Monday and be reduced to a Tropical Depression. Tropical Storm Kay currently poses little threat to the Baja peninsula. Sudden and heavy rains and thunderstorms may occur in the extreme southern portions of the state, drawn westward from the mainland as a result of Kay’s passage through early next week.

The next update to this information will occur after the 3PM release from the National Hurriucane Center.
