The first Annual International FreeDiving Competition “Big Blue” will be held in the Sea Of Cortez named by the legend Jacques Cousteau as the the “Aquarium of the World” November 1 to 9, 2015. Not only the best competitors in Apnea will test the depth of the Gulf of California in warm and pristine waters but also interact with the abundant sea life this National Park offers. Freediving with Whale Sharks and other giants will be only a small part of this incredible adventure.
Big Blue Competition is a mediator to stimulate awareness to everyone on how to Preserve our Oceans and the environment as a whole. Each one of us as a professional Freediver is an Ambassador to this noble cause and passionate to share this love to the World.
The NGO “México Azul” aims to raise awareness about ocean conservation through interviewing the athletes, television, social networks and printed media. As a part of Big Blue’s program, freedivers (world champion) and scientists will give a speech during a conference about the current situation of the oceans and alternatives to make it better; the guest audience will be able to become part of the shark conservation program: Baby Hammerheads Adoptions by Mexico Azul Foundation. You are cordially invited to be part of these conferences that will be held at Costa Baja Resort & Spa in La Paz, BCS, Mexico on November 6th starting at 10 am.
The Competitions:
Freediving is going to depth just with the air in the lungs. There are 3 competition disciplines in depth. The first one and the most popular is Constant Weight CWT. It gets its name because you are allowed to use weight to facilitate the immersion, however, the amount of weight that you use to go down is the same you need to keep to come back to the surface (as a rule). In this discipline the athlete swim down to depth and back again to surface using a Monofin, kicking like a dolphin or like a mermaid, the strength comes mostly from the abdominal muscles.
The second discipline is Constant Weight No Fins CNF, the principle with weights is the same, but in this category athletes swim down into the ocean in Breast Style, without using any fin or tool to help, just the human body. This one is considered the most demanding and athletic of all disciplines, as most of the body muscles are used and the oxygen consumption is higher with these movements.
The third and the last is a very relaxing one, however most demanding for the arms; athletes pull the line to go down and up, it is named Free Immersion FIM. Athletes will compete in these three categories during the Big Blue event. The one who accumulate more points will be the winner!
The Event’s Honor Guest “Deepest Man in the World”
