The warm, calm waters at La Paz attracts hundreds of whales during migrating season. During December through April, the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez are filled with migrating whales that travel 20,000 miles from the Bering Sea to reach the warm and calm waters of La Paz, Baja California Sur in Mexico. It is in this particular area of Baja California Sur that visitors can get an unforgettable whale watching experience. The most represented species is the gray whale, which makes the long journey from the Bering Sea to several lagoons located just a few kilometers from La Paz to mate or give birth.
Baja California has four national protected areas, where whale watching is possible. Baja offers whales the perfect water conditions for winter breeding and birth. During the whale watching season, generally from December 15th up to the beginning of April, excursions are arranged daily to Magdalena Bay, San Ignacio and Lopez Mateos where whales can be observed up close. Gray whales are naturally peaceful and friendly and at times get close enough to be able to touch them.
Whale watching in La Paz, Baja California Sur, is a unique experience unequal to any other along the pacific side of Baja California. With its picturesque scenery and calm waters along the coast, La Paz is an ideal location to watch these majestic creatures and other marine animals. Other whales that visit the Gulf of California are the Blue Whale, the largest in the world, between the months of March through July, the Humpback Whale which can be observed during the months of February to June and the Pilot Whale, also known as Calderon Negro, which can be observed during the months of October through February.
